How can I become a human lab rat?

scifi book, kid inhales gas in lab later can only breathe toxic gas, kid pulls rat from toxic gas cage can't breathe air

  • sci-fi book, young adult read. Kid and his mom live near an area with volcanic activity. Kid breathes in an unknown gas in some lab. Starts having trouble breathing normally. Eventually he gets to where he can't breathe at all normally until he visits the volcanic area. specific scene is him in the lab again, and he pulls a lab rat out of a toxic gas filled cage. The rat dies in his hand and it looks like it suffocated in normal air. sort of sci-fi/medical thriller.
