How does one get the government to pay you? Is there a website I can go to, to see what I qualify for?

Maybe I'm not asking the right question, I guess Im just wondering if i'm getting screwed here. let me tell my story: I was unemployed in 2010, didnt file taxes for the unemployment that I collected and the company who I filed my taxes through for that year (who are no longer in business) did not claim my unemployment on my taxes, so now I get a bill from Uncle Sam saying I owe 1200 dollars and I'm wondering if there is any way to get around this other than paying?

Did you examine the return before you signed it?

I gave them everything to include (which included my unemployment information) this company just did not file my unemployment with my return. I sat down and everything looked kosher, and signed it, and got the return, but then got this letter that says you owe this cause it wasnt included and looking back on the return it doesnt look like it was, which doesnt make sense because I gave them that information to include on the return

At this point, unfortunately, they're not in business, so you're responsible. Call the IRS and see if you can work out a deal.

Yeah I thought so. I just thought there could be something else I could do.
