Can I get this on Direct TV?

Can I get HD Service to my DVR without paying all the extra money to Direct TV?

  • I just got a Westinghouse HD 1080 P TV. Three months ago I agreed to a two year contract with Direct TV, after requesting a DVR. I am charged a monthly fee for DVR service. During this time Direct TV offered me an HD DVR with an new HD dish, and service free of charge. I contacted Direct TV yesterday to get the service they offered and was told, I now have to pay a discounted price of 118.00 for dish, box and a 10.00 monthly HD fee. Is there a way to get HD service while keeping Direct TV?

  • Answer:

Are you asking about dropping Direct TV, or just not paying them to rent a DVR every month?

I can't drop Direct TV at this time. I am in a two year contract. My current DVR is not HD. I do not have an HD satellite. Direct TV wants to charge me for an HD DVR receiver, and an HD satellite, and a monthly fee for HD service. I am trying to find out if there is a loophole to get HD signal to my DVR without paying for an HD satellite, and an HD DVR and avoiding the monthly service charge for HD service.

The only thing I can suggest is you can get over-the-air HD channels with an antenna, but you won't be able to use the DVR you have to record from those channels. Keep an eye out for the special offers. Here's a forum with more people with similar complaints to yours.

If it makes you feel any better, I pay $32/month for an HD DVR and $70/month for "Ultimate HD", whatever that means.

Yoiu can get HD from broadcast television if you are close enough to the source. That will go direclty to a tuner and a DVR. But your situation is more complicated.

You mean broadcast television as in local channels? Yes, I am not trying to get rid of Direct TV at this time, since I am in a contract. Will definitely dump them after my contract is up. I am trying to figure out how to get the HD signal while using Direct TV without paying them all the money. Is there some sort of HD amplifier, or something I can do to get the HD signal without paying Direct TV MORE money?

Looks like a "premium channel" set up. Either you pay fo it or get a package with it. Any equipment would be in the line of a violation of the rules they set up. Did you ask them?

Gary4books

I have not asked them if there is any equipment I can get that would allow me to get HD service through them without paying them. They want to make the money, so I seriously doubt they are going to tell me if there is something I can do to get the signal without giving them more money. I am already paying over 100.00 per month for the Direct TV service I have now. They have made plenty of money from me over the past 12 years.

I was thinking about some package deal that might save you money.

Gary4books

probably not. but you can complain to them to see why you were offered one deal, now they won't honor this deal.
