How do I hook up my pioneer dvd player?

  • Answer:

If you want your dvd and dvr to go through the receiver you'll have to use component video (3 video cables + 2 audio cables) between each component and the receiver and between the receiver and the tv. It's a lot of cables, but at least you'll get HD. Alternatively you could feed the video directly to the tv, using hdmi where you have it. Then feed all your audio through the receiver. There could be a delay in the sound coming out of the receiver, however.

DCComet, Thanks for the reply. Sorry to be a pain but I know very little about this stuff and a blow by blow explanation would be very much appreaciated. Is it possible to get more specific on the connections (I mean in laymen terms). Thanks ANAV4011

Sure, I'll be happy to help. I just looked at a picture of the back of your receiver and it won't work for HD video, so just connect all the video directly to your TV. I assume you already have speakers hooked up to your receiver, which is why you want to go through the receiver. Connect the DVR with an HDMI cable from HDMI out on the DVR to an HDMI input on your TV. Then connect audio cables from the audio out (L and R) to 2 audio inputs on your receiver. As long as you don't use the inputs labeled phono you can use any other inputs you want. Use CD if it's free, or Tape1 would probably be fine. Just remember what it is because you'll have to select that sound source on the receiver to hear the sound. Then connect the DVD player video to the TV with component video. Wikipedia has a good picture of component cables and what the input might look like on your equipment (see link below). Some component cables have 5 cables hooked together which includes audio and some just have 3 hooked together just for video. You only need video cables since you're sending your audio to a different piece of equipment. These cables would work if you don't have some already. http://www.amazon.com/Belkin-PureAV-AV21000-06-6-Foot-Component/dp/B0001VWHGS/ref=sr_1_5?ie=UTF8&qid=1320840932&sr=8-5 Now connect the DVD audio cables (L and R) to the receiver. Use the inputs that are labeled DVD. Assuming you already have your speakers hooked up, you're done! I hope there's not much of a sound lag, however. The receiver may be slower processing the audio than the TV is in processing the video. It will be more obvious when you play the DVR because you will get sound out of the TV as well as the speakers. You can just turn down your TV volume.
