Do you have to pay the money back if you have been overpaid?

I am retiring in a few days and HR just notified me I was overpaid the last 2 months. Must I pay the money back?

  • I am a college teacher and sometimes I teach summer school and get paid extra. This summer my class didn't open because there were not enough students. Payroll apparently didn't catch it until yesterday. I realized I was credited more money than usual and I thought it might be for the many unused sick days I had accumulated. Today I had a call from HR saying they had overpaid me $10,000, about $2000 is deductions, tax, etc. What are my options?

  • Answer:

Um, yeah. If you were, indeed, overpaid, then you owe it back, no matter how close you are to retirement. Kat
