In addition to the Command + Shift + 3 and 4 methods, there is a free app in the Mac app store called Skitch you may want to check out. Once you install it you push Command + Shift + 5 instead and it gives you crosshairs to select a region, but then you can do simple edits on it like draw arrows and write text, then just hit a single button and it uploads it to their server so you can share it with people online. Very handy app.
