How do I deduct car use at my job?

I use my Roomate's car to deliver newspapers, can I deduct miles I use on his car from my taxes?

  • I am privately contracted by the local paper which they pay me to deliver their papers and am not an employee just a private contractor... I am temporarily using his car to make my deliveries until I can save enough money for a car for myself! Can I keep track of miles, gas, repairs, ect on his car in order to deduct them from my taxes?

  • Answer:

I would contact the IRS on this. The IRS is very specific on vehicle ownership used for business and tax deductions. But, the IRS also says if you rent a vehicle for business, then the rent, gas and everything else is tax deductible. If you deduct the actual expenses, you can't deduct mileage . If you use the standard mileage rate, you then can't deduct actual expenses. You would need to do a calculation to see if the actual expenses gives you a larger deduction than the standard mileage rate. (Actual expenses are usually higher.) The tax form asks if you bought or leased a vehicle for business. It does not say borrowed, that is why I would contact the IRS.
