How old does something have to be before being considered 'antique?

How old does something have to be before it's considered an antique, or does it vary according to the item?

  • When does it go from being a "collectible" to an "antique?" Can't find a definitive answer to this and its driving me nuts!

  • Answer:

This is from Wikipedia, so you can believe it or not: "The only real law concerning the definition of the word antique comes from the US customs office, that considers antique as anything 100 years old." A collectible can be any item, any age--the toys at McDonald's, for instance!

Other answers

"In the UK anything over 75 years old generally qualifies as an antique. A car is known as a collectible "classic" rather than an antique after 25 years. There is an understood line between antiques and collectibles in the United States as well. An item is tagged as an antique by most reliable commercial antique dealers if it is more than 100 years old, even though the universal common understanding is 75 years, and anything less than 100 years is called a collectible."

I've also seen 50 years for things such as toys etc. - there must be a dividing line somewhere.
