They are among the special interest subject areas for which scholarships are available through selected organizations. Hawk Mountain Sanctuary International Internship International students acquire firsthand knowledge of birds of prey at the Hawk Mountain Sanctuary in east central Pennsylvania. The sanctuary's four-month International Conservation Science Internship Program offers hands-on learning and field experience in conservation to English-speaking undergraduate and graduate students from more than 60 countries. The program includes all areas of science, education and conservation concerning migratory raptors, environmental survey and monitoring, land management and ecotourism. Applications call for a comprehensive resume, and an essay that reflects the benefits of an internship to the applicant's goals. Interns have free housing at the Sanctuary and a monthly stipend of $600 as of 2011. American Association of University Women International Fellowships The American Association of University Women (AAUW) offers international fellowships for one year of graduate or postgraduate studies in the U.S. The goal is to provide fellows with knowledge to benefit them and their home countries with special emphasis on assistance to women and girls. Fellowship requirements include citizenship of a country other than the United States, enrollment in a U.S. institution, and English proficiency. Applications require three recommendations, official transcripts, and proof of bachelor's or doctorate degrees. For the 2011 to 2012 academic year, the master's degree fellowship offered an annual stipend of $18,000, the doctoral fellowship annual stipend was $20,000, and the postdoctoral fellowship annual stipend was $30,000. Thomas and Ruth Rivers International Scholarship The World Leisure Organization, a nongovernmental membership organization with United Nations consultative status, sponsors the Thomas and Ruth Rivers International Scholarship. This award invites senior or graduate students worldwide to present an academic paper on a subject related to their studies, at the biennial World Leisure Congress. The award covers congress registration, accommodation and air transportation. Scholarship candidates are final-year college or university undergraduate or graduate students majoring in recreation, leisure services and tourism. Undergraduates need a 3.5 GPA and graduates require a 3.8 GPA, plus volunteer or paid work experience in their fields of study to be eligible. Applications include a personal letter from the candidate and recommendations from two faculty members. World Leisure discloses no monetary value for the scholarship.
