Sorry to be pedantic but according to the legend as I learnt it....he actually ran from Athens to Sparta to deliver a message asking for help against the Persians; they said they were busy with a religious festival, so sorry and he ran back again with the message. Much more significant in terms of distance! The whole Athenian army trekked from Marathon back to Athens after the battle because the Persians re-embarked and tried to make a landing further down the coast. They headed home when they saw the Athenian army drawn up and waiting for them again. I learnt all this because I went to Marathon with my Greek class many years ago and this was the history as related by the guide ;).

Things really haven't changed much...the important people fly by private jet while the rest of us share germs in coach and so called first class, Amtrak, or bus. Our immune systems will be stronger and we'll outlive the ruling class! Thus voiding the idea, that living well is the best revenge. It should say, outliving your pampered political representatives is little satisfaction but half a loaf is better than none (or thank goodness for small things...)

Pretty close. Guess "marathon" was easier to pronounce otherwise the race might be called the Pheidippidean Run!

The Greeks had horses . . . or Alexander the Great had a horse. They didn't have many horses, so only the important people got to ride them (and messengers were obviously not important.)
