Why does Amazon have ads?

Alliance for Main St. Fairness's attack ads say Amazon should collect sales tax. Hey Amazon, let's fight back! But how?

  • This is in PA and other states, too. They say call your state reps to demand Amazon collect sales tax from us. All that means is more tax for me and less business for Amazon. I'm calling my state reps to tell them the opposite! BTW, this is backed by Sears and Walmart, etc. If they get their way I've got less to spend at their stores. As if I'd still want to. Amazon, please tell us you're fighting back!

Stores that exist because they closed the doors of Mom and Pop businesses across the nation. Now they are complaining LOL Amazon recently agreed to finish building a huge warehouse and supply center and even expand their original plans. They were holding out in S. Carolina because the state was demanding they tax in-state customers. SC agreed not to make Amazon start collecting taxes for five years due to the service jobs Amazon would offer the state by finishing the project but now a precedent has been set and other states are going to demand the same. Amazon has basically given up the fight and in five years or so, we'll be deciding whether Amazon is worth the difference between being able to actually look at a product in a local store, try it out and return it immediately. Because either way, we're going to pay the taxes on the purchase. They must be working to invent a new hook.

Sure, let's re-write the U.S. Constitution. Amazon cogently argues that taxing their sales is a matter of one state trying to tell a business in another state what to do, while the U.S. Constitution says the federal government is who handles those interstate problems. Forget about PA or anyone else passing worthless laws. Our own U.S. Congress is who is supposed to solve this one (I know, good luck with that, huh?)

Wow, I did not know that. States want the money badly enough they'd want this precedent interpreted loosely (there are judges who specialize in that), so they could enforce their tax laws in other states. Imagine the headache for small online retailers. It's enough trouble remitting sales tax to your own state. Amazon and other online retailers had better fight this. I called my state rep to oppose the Alliance for Main Street Fairness, and found out there is legislation in the works in PA. I did my part. Thanks!

Let's not rewrite it, let's demand our legislators follow it. Evidently there's a big push on to pass state laws to tax interstate sales. Probably supporters of such laws expect them to be upheld by judges who think U.S. Constitution means whatever they want it to mean. Meanwhile I've been calling my state legislators. Amazon can afford to fight this, and I hope they do. This could really hurt small internet retailers. It's enough of a hassle to remit sales tax to one state, let alone almost fifty! Thanks!
