What is the professional way to ask business owners if you can put your business cards (artist) in their stores?

Answer:
Your an artist who wants to put your cards in stores? Ok, don't see a problem, there are stores you can go to who aren't competitors, such as a deli, or any store that doesn't sell art. You can ask if you can leave some of your business cards in a small holder on a counter. What you can also do to entice the owner, is to tell them if they put their name on the back of the card, and it results in a customer sale for you, you will give them a few $$$ maybe or a $5.00 gift card, or points towards buying one of your pieces. Some little token of appreciation Better still if that business could benefit from your business too. My hair stylist does that, I have some of her cards, I put my name on the back and pass them out, if that person takes the card to my stylist I get a nice discount off my next hair appointment. I'm sure most of us have seen business cards in stores that were left by other people.

Work out a commission solution. I have done what you suggest, at first business cards, which might seem professional at first-but they aren't. I send out brochures now. I list on the brochure a code that will give the buyer free shipping, when that code is used, it will indicate which establishment referred them, and I send $10 to their paypal account with each sale. You can do a similar thing by saying maybe 10% off final price when they bring you the brochure, and give referral commission to the establishment. Write up a contract stating that with each referral you'll give 5% of the final price. You will deposit the money in their paypal account every two weeks. Make it easy for yourself and easy for them. They shouldn't have to do any work at all but sign the contract and display the brochure.

There really isn't a professional way to ask a business owner if he would promote your business instead of his own.

Make sure you leave a blank white spot on your brochures that you print out, get several different stamps, assign one to each establishment, and stamp each one for its corresponding business so you know who exactly referred you.

Do a free drawing and give something to the owner. This will encourage others to give you their contact info or business cards.
