Answer:
There is no way to fix it on your own unless you're a tech genius. You could TRY looking up ways to fix it online, but you'll most likely find erroneous and unreliable sources. I'm sorry to say that if you get the Yellow Light of Death, and don't want to spend $150 to fix it, you are going to be stuck with a broken system for a long time. The causes, well there can be a lot of them, but the main cause for most PS3 owners who get the light is overheating. You know how some people can be with video gaming, playing for hours and hours on end. Doing that can be harmful to the system, especially if you don't keep it in a well-ventilated area. I'm fairly certain that the system must be kept a minimal of four inches away from all surrounding objects, so as to reduce the risk of overheating. Another thing you might consider is wiping the vents clear of dust whenever it starts to build up, to let the heat escape. Another cause (though it really depends on how powerful it is, and only happens when you touch the sensors on the front of the system) can be an exceptionally strong static electric shock. Small shocks can cause the system to flash a yellow light and turn off, but by flipping the main power switch in the back off, then back on again, the system should recover. It is still advisable to turn the system off right after you turn it on again. In fact it should ask you to do so in order to avoid damage or loss of data. Preventing static electric shocks is fairly straight forward- just touch something metal first, and then you should be able to safely touch your PS3 without fear of accidentally shutting it down. Those are all the causes I know of. As for fixing it without having to pay $150, well I'm afraid you're on your own in that department.
