What exactly is 3G and why is it more expansive than WiFi?

when comsidering PC Tablets- what exactly is "3G"? If it has WiFi- why do I need 3G?- thanks

  • Answer:

WiFi is what you use to connect to your local home network. 3G is what you use to connect when you're not at your home. 3G is the same network that cellphones work on. So basically, if your tablet has 3G, you can get a connection anywhere your cellphone works. If it doesn't, you can only get a connection at home or at businesses that provide WiFi.

Please ignore Anonymous_User. He is completely wrong in regards to 3G on tablet devices. Cellphones require dataplans. Tablets do not necessarily. For example, the Kindle does not require a dataplan. The iPad does. Even for those that do, to say that it's "never a good idea" is just idiotic.

its never a good idea to get a 3g device, because they require that you have a data plan, etc. The speed is slow, they charge you a LOT, and you can get internet anywhere via a 3g or 4g hotspot which you can purchase separately and is ultimately cheaper.
