Why is organic chemistry hard?

How/why's it that I always did better in regular chemistry than in organic chemistry?

  • I have always done pretty well in chemistry, getting As and Bs. However, I flunked organic chemistry, as I couldn't understand the models nor the concepts. Was it because organic chemistry is 3-D and regular inorganic chemistry is just math, which I'm good at? What could be some reasons?

Life is complicated. More to your question, the chemistry to have life is profoundly more complicated than inorganic chemistry. Fact is, if one doesn't notice that none of this could happen without an intelligence of some kind making it happen, one isn't paying attention.

I'd say that you 'got it' pretty right...I was the COMPLETE opposite. A friend of mine and I used to take turns driving to college when we were both taking organic and she could never really understand the concepts...no matter how many different ways I tried explaining them to her. It does seem that people tend to be better at one more so than the other. And, unless 'The Thought' has changed, it is my understanding (I was taught/told) that girls tend to be better at 'conceptional-thinking' vs. boys for 'thinking in numbers'. Be thankful you are quite good at one...some people aren't very good at 'thinking in' either way!
