Originality in Hollywood? Where?!

It exists but this film was uber fast and appealed to a very young audience. I liked it but it was not a truly "Great" film. It glorified a person for being the richest young person in the world and it appealed to a young, hip crowd who missed the mark when it comes to art.

I saw it and it was interesting but I did not leave the theater feeling I'd seen any truly great writing, any truly great acting and I don't even remember the music. That's odd for me. It encouraged us to discuss how unethical almost everyone in the film was, and how the youthful idealism I remember has been replaced by a mad competition and hunger for money and power at the expense of loyalty and honesty. Other than that, it gave me a headache.

I saw the Kings Speech and left the theater inspired. And I was wowed by Colin Firth's brilliant acting ability.

I was read the winning awards this morning over coffee and for some reason I came off thinking that the Facebook creator - I don't even know his name - had won best actor. Thank you. I feel a lot better although the film itself had a heck a better message and was brilliantly accomplished. It deserved a great deal more. Before the film was released, suddenly that moron is inspired to make a philanthropic donation to charity for the first time, then the movie, then he's suddenly Time Magazine Man of the Year. I want to barf.

The King's Speech is a character piece and it makes more sense for it to win an actor's award.

I've seen films that focus on the main character that won Golden Globes and Academy Awards. I don' buy that :)

I am reminded of the year Titanic won for Best Picture. It was a picture in every sense of the word and it deserved the prize but it wasn't a character piece and didn't win the acting awards. Jack Nicholson and an actress whose name escapes me at the moment won best actor and best actress for As Good As It Gets which was a character piece. I think that things like this happen more often than you're aware of.

Titanic focused on the life of a woman confined to her class and social limitations against the backdrop of a catastrophe. The catastrophe literally saved her life. The Kings Speech focused on a leaders disability against the backdrop of World War II. The pressure of the crown literally was the impetus for overcoming his disability.
