will the dmv (california) give an extension for smog check to get done?

hi, i was wondering if the dmv (california) will give an extension for the smog check. my boyfriend went to the dmv almost a month ago and they gave him a month to get it done. his been fixing his car and hasnt had the money to do the smog. so will the dmv give him an extension? hopefully like another month to get his smog? if so will there be any extra charges? thank you for your help.
