Is it worth it to become an insurance agent?

Will having a suspended drivers license prevent me from being able to become an insurance agent?

  • I want to become an insurance agent. I have a clean criminal record, good credit and no problems in my background, however, I currently have a suspended drivers license. I have heard that this could prevent me from becoming an agent at companies like Farmers, Allstate or State Farm. Does anyone know if this is correct? Should I wait until it is reinstated (May 2011) to go through the formal application process with these companies, or am I just screwed?

    Well, if you wind up selling car insurance, you can be an expert on it. I think the insurance company would car more if you had an insurance fraud felony on your record, rather than a DUI. I think you'll be OK!

Yes and no. What kind of insurance agent do you want to become. If you are going to sell auto, homeowners, life and health, you will need a car to get to training programs and see clients. These types of companies will not hire you if you do not have access to a car. If all you are doing is sitting in an office all day, then there may be a way to work things out until you get you license back. They are going to want to know why the license is suspended. All the details. Speeding multiple times, DUI, unpaid fines. Companies like Allstate, State Farm, Liberty Mutual, etc. will probably not hire you until you have your license back. You need to call each of the companies you are interested in and ask what their position is on a suspended license and working for them. I was a manager of a large Property, Casualty, Life and Health company for 16 years before becoming an independent. I would not have been able to hire you with a suspended drivers license.
