What would the male equivalent of a "maiden name" be? (what would mean "his former name before married'? Such an act would seem oddly degrading or perhaps in some way enlightened or respectful -- depending on how you look at it and who is doing the looking.

Answer:
Sure. There is no law that says you have to change your name, on take the mans last name after marriage. In this day and age, I doubt anyone would think it degrading, or respectful. It just is. His birth name would be the correct term, I believe, for the male equal of maiden name.

I knew a kid who took his wife's surname. I think he referred to the previous one as his original name.

Thanks -- societal norms still rule most people think is normal, however. It might seem very odd to some people I know, as if someone had a psychological problem. But personally, I like the idea that the man marries into 'her' family or clan.

As a side note, it's interesting (to me, anyway) that the traditional "woman changes her last name to the man's" is not only not "traditional" everywhere, but is in fact rather insane in some places. For example, in Spain, no one changes their name due to marriage. Instead, everyone has two last names. Their first last name is their father's first last name, and their second last name is their mother's first last name. The two parents do *not* have the same last name, even when married. So if a man named Juan Alpha Beta marries a woman named Maria Gamma Delta, they will keep their names exactly as are, and their child would be named Miguel Alpha Gamma.
