Filming in black and white versus color?

Who thinks Spielberg made a mistake in not filming Schindler's List in color?

  • Answer:

Not I. I think Spielberg was aware of the impact of the story and it's history so he tried to communicate that story including its dreariness. The little girl in red signified blood, probably the blood spilled by all the victims of the Halocaust. If he had used color it would have taken away from its history since black and white film was what was available during that time. Artistically, color would have creating different emotions. The little girl's message would have also been lost.

There are two people here who are entitled to their opinion : But in telling their sides show blatant ignorance in story telling , movie making , cinematography ...AND The Holocaust...Being in Black and white was essential ,to so many aspects of this film : The darkness and dreariness of live in the ghetto...was a reflection of the hopelessness , despair and horror of Jews. Sure life then happened in 'color' so when you figured that out that makes it automatically BAD that it was hot in B & W ? Thats shows no depth in thinking or imagination. It's yells " I have NO vision or insight into artistry " Thank god there are video games still out there for certain people who have zero insight into Well made movies.

Nope. Black and white was a perfect artistic choice.

KDP, you don't even care about other people's answers - Only your own point of view. What's the point in even asking the question if you're not going to accept others' viewpoints?

I thought he was better able to convey the era in Private Ryan myself. But I don't know how much it would mean to me if I was able to see a version in color. .

I've read your arguments. I respectfully disagree. I think we all know that the Holocaust happened in color. We all know the world wasn't really black and white back then. But to me, shooting the film in black and white helped to create an atmosphere of despair that was very appropriate for the mood of the piece. No, it wasn't as "realistic" as color would have been, in the sense of portraying the world exactly as it actually is. But for me it was more artistic and emotional this way. Having studied a bit about the use of color and lighting in film, I found it very effective. Of course, we all have different opinions, and you are free to disagree, as I know you do. I get the impression that you don't really care for black and white movies, or for artistic symbolism, so perhaps this just wasn't the movie for you.

Color would have detracted from the film. It was a dark, black and white period; bright green trees and fluffy white clouds in a beautiful blue sky would have been a distraction, not to mention evoking the wrong emotional response.

Some people get off on black and white movies. I don't. How can b&W be realistic when colors are a reality in real life, unless maybe when it's dark with little light. Sorry, I don't get it...

not me! colour tends to symbolise happiness so putting it in black and white makes the movie all the more depressing
