Do you think it is right to punish people who make grammar and spelling mistakes? Do you think it is right to treat them as inferiors? Why?

I have made many, many of my own spelling mistakes. I have not always used correct grammar. I have noticed other people ridiculing people for spelling things wrong and for using poor grammar. I have noticed people going on the attack over this sort of stuff. I have noticed very intelligent people treated as though they were less than intelligent just because of how they chose to communicate. If I ever have in the past, I am truly sorry to the people I affected. I do have an agenda with this question, and I am not afraid to say so. What does punishing other people for their spelling and grammar do? What does that say about our culture? What does that say about how we treat people who may be learning English? What does that say about how we treat people who spell phonetically? What does that say about how we treat people with a number of learning disabilities? Does it make you proud of yourself if you can spot an error? Does it make you feel like you have power over someone else because you know how to attack someone? Does it make you feel like you are better because you pride yourself on your grammar and your spelling? Does it make you feel good that you can tear someone else down? Does it make you feel happy that you know how to take your anger out on someone else who may have not done anything to offend you other than spelling a word wrong or making a typo or a small grammar mistake? Are you offended that that person's grammar and spelling are not perfect? If so, why?

Answer:
No we should never punish anyone..we don't know why they make mistakes..maybe they are dsylexic or can't spell..it's rude to assume people are lazy or stupid.. If anything we should be helping them! :D

some people are grasping at straws to "win an argument" that being said, if im having trouble understanding someone, then i will ask them to reword something... i make errors too.

I can't speak for everyone, but I will only criticize someone's grammar/syntax/spelling if it shows extreme laziness or indifference to clear communication (e.g. text/IM-speak on Answerbag grinds my gears). Otherwise, about the only thing I'll do is make a joke if the mistake lends itself to humor. I'd rather discuss ideas that spelling.

I have come across many of ab members make fool about grammatical , misspelt in the questions and i think those who are pointing out the grammatical, spelling are the gruduate from university and wasting their time on ab ,instead they should be doing some productive work in their life instead of pointing the mistakes of others.

I haven't noticed any of your mistakes. I do see that you communicate very well here. When people point out my errors, I don't feel they are punishing me. I try not to misspell words and I try to use correct grammar, but mistakes still happen. Grammar, spelling and punctuation are important here because this is the main form of communication. Get that right and people can focus on the real deal. Also, remember that if you are typing a lot of questions and answers you will then be increasing your chances of making mistakes. Some people make way too many mistakes and don't seem to bother with correcting any of them. I know that for some people English is not their first language, they also should take advantage of being corrected. Not a day goes by that my speaking language is questioned or corrected, that is how I learn.

No, they should not be punished. First, we are all suspect to the accidental typo. Second, some people are trying their best to type in a language that is not necessarily their native tongue. It's one thing if someone is obviously typing in text-talk or obviously spelling unreasonably poor - those people are best off ignored and maybe they will figure it out. But for others: if their good intent is obvious, just let it be; we are not a group of spelling instructors passing out grades.

sometimes it is difficult to distinguish exactly what a person is try to say if they use incorrect grammar...other than that I try to ignore it...often the incorrect use of grammar will be the correct useage in the future as a language evolves:)

Only if the punishiment is :Tirty lashs wit a wet noddle. Nope. Because none of us iz all that and a big bag of chips. I think people who live for pointing out other people's mistakes are sad little creatures and they have my pity. I have noticed that people who take an overweening pride in their grammar and spelling often have little else to offer by way of creativity. I guess if you live only by the rules you tend to think inside the box.

I don't know about punishing, but I most certainly will point it out, particularly if that person is trying to be a smart arse. One of my biggest annoyances is "Could/would/should of" instead of "Could/would/should have". I swear that gets on my tits every time.
