How to connect dual monitors to iMac?

Can I connect a Dell flat screen monitor to my iMac so I can view on both monitors at the same time? If so, what do I need to do so? Thanks!

  • Answer:

If it has a mini-DVI connector, you can buy a convertor from Apple to regular DVI or VGA, whichever your monitor has. If not, you can buy a USB to video adaptor to get video out the USB port.

I haven't tried that with an iMac but I did connect up an lcd television that had a vga connector on it to a Windows laptop and for you to get the picture on your big screen you have to switch off the screen on the laptop. There is usually a function key on your laptop that you push that allows you to do this. Most laptops only have 1 vga output socket so you cannot run more than 1 display at a time, it's either the built in screen or an external monitor. But that may be different on an iMac.
