How do you do something very important?

When something goes wrong, how important to you is establishing blame?

  • If you want to use a 1 - 10 scale, 1, would be "not at all important" with 10 being "as important as it could possibly be".

  • Answer:

CF...it isn't establishing blame. It is finding the source of the "going wrong". At what point did things break down? You have to do that in order to figure out how to prevent its happening again. You cannot simply go from "went wrong" and move on to "made right". It doesn't work that way. I'm a retired Internal Auditor. We have to take everything apart, examine every piece, and figure out which ones are faulty and in so doing how the he** did they get there in the first place? It is all part of the solution my friend. You have to identify the weak link in a chain that breaks, right? You may call it establishing blame..I call it finding the source of the problem! :)

I think it's just human nature to assign blame. The hard part is not letting the blame game get in the way of a solution to the problem. I try not to point the finger, because chances are the person responsible knows they are responsible. If there's a lesson to be learned in the mistake, that person will learn the lesson much better if they are shown a little understanding, and are then included in the clean up process.
