Is watching videos of people doing illegal things illegal?

  • I know in some cases it's not illegal, such as a robbery caught on tape. The news often times shows crimes caught on tape. Child pornography is illegal to produce and/or possess. War videos from Iraq and Afghanistan are all over the internet and even on YouTube so I'm guessing they are legal. Executions are all over the internet as well, such as the execution of Saddam Hussein. What makes a video of a crime being committed illegal to watch? Where do you draw the line? I understand people responsible for the production of snuff films should be prosecuted as murderers and accessories to murders, but is it illegal to watch such films? I can see why it's illegal to buy them, as the purchaser may be the biggest or only reason to why the film was produced in the first place, but what about people who watch them without paying for it? If no one purchased snuff films, would they still be produced just for the thrill of people watching it? Should it then, under those circumstances, be illegal? Even then, no matter what, people are going to continue to watch gruesome videos. There are websites dedicated to satisfying people's blood lust, such as the infamous rotten.com. I'm not saying either way that watching them should be legal or not, but if it's illegal then shouldn't the news not be allowed to fulfill terrorists' intentions of spreading terror? What about videos of child abuse and wife-beating, kidnapping, torture, and other illegal acts? Should it depend on the laws of the country the event is done in or the local laws of where the video is being watched?

You bring in a lot of good arguments but the simple answer is, no, it is not illegal, anywhere that I know of. Wrong maybe. It is illegal to be a witness to a crime and not come forward though.
