can i plug in headphones to a tv and not loose the tv speakers sound?

Some TVs have an independant volume control for headphones and speakers, it sounds like yours doesn't. In most cases the speakers are switched off by some contacts within the headphone socket, modification would be possible by a competent TV engineer.

Not without taking it apart and resoldering the wire to the socket. The socket has a built in bypass switch.
