Can you help me clear my doubts regarding the use of English prepositions?
-
1)He is Driver FOR president. (is it wrong to say he is Driver Of or To sb. ? Why ? or when can we use of or to?)2. Teacher IN English( is it wrong to say teacher of or for English) 3. British Envoy FOR Pakistan and British Ambasadar TO India (both envoy and ambasadars are working for the same country in another country but the prepositions we use is FOR for Envoy and TO for Ambasadar. Why ?) 4. Secretary TO minister. (can't we use OF or any other prepositions here? ) 5. Assistant TO director. 6. Advocate TO or FOR or OF Managing Director ? And my another doubt regarding prepositions TO, FOR and OF follows. eg: 1. Kerala is home TO Malayalam speaking people. 2. It's home FOR mad people. 3. It's home OF a poor farmer. Please notice that here we use different prepositions after the noun Home. I don't know when to use For, Of or To in these kind of sentences. What's the difference between the two sentences below. 1) She is mother TO three kids 2) She is mother OF three kids. Please kindly reply me. Thanks in advance

Answer:
1./ you can use for when you are using... a definite or indefinite article....as in He is A drive for THE president. Or he is THE driver (for THE) (of THE) president,,,or A president...//You can also say He is A driver of THE president,,,or A president..your problem here seems to involve the use of definite and indefinite articles. 2./Teacher in English is incorrect. You must use a definite or indefinite article...You can say a teacher of English, and You can either use; a teacher of English (a person who teaches English)...or A teacher for the English(a teacher who teaches English people) 3./ I think for and to are almost interchangeable here....probably just common useage dictates the difference...but everyone would understand you if you used either. 4./ you can use either. 5./ you can use either. 6/. advocate of the Managing director ...means that he advocates the Managing directors work whereas advocate for the managing implies that he is working in the position of advocator advocate of....means, again, that he advocates the managing directors work...but does not necessarily work for the managing directer 1./Kerala is home to or for Malayalam speaking people is correct. 2./It's home for mad people.--implies that mad people are placed there...not necessarily to their liking. It's home to mad people/---implies that mad people consider it their home. 3./ It's THE home of a poor farmer....again the definite/indefinite article will help so that you can also say It's A home of a poor farmer as well. And you can say it's a home for a poor farmer(meaning that it is the home that would be suitable for any poor farmer) 1./ There is no difference between to 3 kids and of 3 kids. hope this helps

1)He is [the] Driver FOR [the] president. He does the President's driving - he's like a chauffeur. (is it wrong to say he is Driver Of or To sb. ? Yes; "driver of" implies he forces the President to some action. "Driver to" implies the President is the destination. 2. Teacher IN English( is it wrong to say teacher of or for English) "Teacher OF English" is one who instructs in that language. 3. British Envoy FOR Pakistan and British Ambasadar TO India (both envoy and ambasadars are working for the same country in another country but the prepositions we use is FOR for Envoy and TO for Ambasadar. Ambassador FOR implies on behalf of a country but not necessarily IN that country; ambassador TO a country states the person's function as well as location. 4. Secretary TO minister. (can't we use OF or any other prepositions here? ) No. While fairly easy to understand, OF & FOR just don't fit - English is quite idiomatic. 5. Assistant TO director. Correct 6. Advocate TO or FOR or OF Managing Director ? "For" implies acting in place of the Director; "to" implies the Director is the target of some inquiry or request. And my another doubt regarding prepositions TO, FOR and OF follows. eg: 1. Kerala is home TO Malayalam speaking people. 2. It's home FOR mad people. 3. It's [the] home OF a poor farmer. These are correct. Please notice that here we use different prepositions after the noun Home. I don't know when to use For, Of or To in these kind of sentences. What's the difference between the two sentences below. 1) She is mother TO three kids 2) She is mother OF three kids. The first can mean she has given birth to three kids, she provides parenting for three kids (who may or may not be biologically hers), or both - usually both. The second is quite like the first, except that it's clearly implied she is the birth mother as well as the parent.

I suggest that you google those expressions or part of expressions to find out if they are frequently used or not. You should also have a look at the kind of results that you get, for instance if it is from an English speaking country, from a book, from a blog, etc. For instance, if I google "is driver for president", your question is the only result that I get. So this is not usually written. "driver for presidents" brings a little more: - "Monte was a driver for Presidents Nixon and Johnson." - "I have an extensive background of over 24 years as a professional driver and security driver for Presidents of corporations" "driver for president" brings: - "Lashkar-e-Toiba Terrorist Worked as Driver for President Prathibha" - "Greer was listed as agent/driver for President Kennedy" - "Truck Driver For President" (to be elected as president) At this point, it seems that your sentence lacks articles or determination: He is A Driver FOR THE president. He is A Driver FOR president KENNEDY. "driver of the president" yields: - "Jozef VERHAEGEN (Driver of the President)" - "The driver of the President's carriage" - "Evkurov Ramzan, who was the driver of the president of Ingushetia" "driver to the President" yields: - "he was personal driver to the President of the Netherlands-Thai Chamber of Commerce"
