What Religious people think of the Vatican bank?

It is officially known as The Institute for Works of Religion. It is commonly, but falsely believed to be the funding source for the Vatican. It is not. It is a separate entity within the walls of Vatican City whose profits are used to fund charitable works by the Vatican. It is not without controversy and has at numerous times in its history been involved in scandals and some rather tantalizing cloak and dagger affairs. It is not under any Italian, European or international monetary oversight and can and has been used for money laundering and tax evasion. As a side note: When Pope John Paul l (Cardinal Albino Luciani) was elected in 1978, he was informed of wrongdoing at the bank and ordered the Vatican's Secretary of State to investigate the matter in depth.
