How to learn to become a programer?

To become a web developer designer, what should I learn and in what order?

  • I would like to learn about web developing and web designing, but don't know where to start. What should I learn and in what order!? (ex. HTML, CSS, Javascript, a programming language, Photoshop, Illustrator, etc.) And should I learn to program first or design first? (Is it better for a programmer to learn design, or a designer to learn programming?)

  • Answer:

A Web page is displayed on a browser (namely Internet Explorer, FireFox, Google Chrome, etc). Browsers only understand HTML, CSS, Javascript etc. This means for any webpage that you create a browser will only able to render it as visualized by you, if and only if your HTML/CSS/Javascript is good. Now related to programming languages like PHP/ASP/ASP.Net etc are Scripting languages that create dynamic HTML content. For example: Your home page requires users to login and after login each user sees their own home page (based on their location preferences). Say a user from United States sees his home page with weather and news from his city where in the same page will be displayed to a user from Australia with content relevant from his locality. This requires content to be dynamically displayed based on the user who is currently viewing the page. So in other words, first you need to learn HTML, CSS and Javascript along with Photoshop/Illustrator (helps you manipulate images for your website and visualize the whole webpage as a image, slice the image and convert them into HTML). Next up would be to learn Programming languages to enable your website to work dynamically. As stated in the previous answer, you can make use of the online tutorials available to accomplish this task. If you wanna learn on your own, then free Tutorials are the best way to go.. Just type into google: "........... Photoshop/Illustrator/Indesign/Flash actionscript 3/html-php tutorial" And start making them. If you REALLY want to get into Graphic designing. Enrol in a design school. I myself have graduated in both Graphic design, and Interactive design. And schools and courses are the best way to do it, in my opinion. It might take more time, but you'll be taught, not only how to work the programs, but also how to implement them into your work environment. I.e. Your own business, freelance designer or working at a design company. The diploma's come in handy too. Schools will also tell you if you are creative enough to be successful. The first lesson you'll ever learn when you're designing for a client is this: Clients have NO IDEA what looks good. Sometimes you will actually have to convince them from completely ruining a project.

I just wet through a similar dilemma! 1. Html/xhtml CSS most important! 2. Wysiwyg editors like Dreamweaver 3. Photoshop, Illustrator and Fireworks in that order 4. Javascript is nice but more and more using Jquery widgets 5. Flash and its language Actionscript 6. Then worry about database stuff like php, coldfusion, flex--if you are not coming from a programming background this is a tough place to start. Nice to know, but gets the basics first
