Meriwether Lewis and William Clark are the Army officers who explored the Pacific Northwest. The idea for the journey began in 1803, following an order from President Thomas Jefferson to have Lewis and Clark explore the American Northwest. The idea behind the expedition was to gain a better understanding of the resources the Louisiana Purchase held.
