What is the best college to go to in Birmingham?

I want to move to Birmingham, UK. Please tell me the process I will need to go through.

  • I am seventeen, I'll be eighteen next January. I'll be graduating in 2012 and I am planning to move to Birmingham, UK to be with my best friend(He is a UK citizen, has lived there his whole life). I am from the United States. I plan on going to college and working there, as well as having a permanent residence. Can someone please explain the process I will go through, the papers I will need and the visa or other requirements I will have to obtain to do this? Also, I would probably prefer to start out with a visa to go to school and then turn that into a permanent residency some how. I would like detailed steps, not links to websites because I've tried looking at those and it's all so confusing to me. Thanks xoxo

You cannot just move to a country because you want to. Getting a visa is very, very difficult. Especially in the U.K. I would apply to U.K. universities. Can your parents afford that? If so, then you can probably get a student visa once you have been accepted. The only way to turn your student visa into a residency visa would be to marry an EU citizen or find an employer willing to sponsor you. The UK is currently having a bit of a population crisis due to all the Eastern Europeans moving there, which they may freely do because they are EU citizens. I had a friend who actually had an employer willing to sponsor him, but the employer was told that he couldn't do it because there are too many E.U. resdents in need of work. (And my friend was Australian, that's a UK commonwealth!) I would talk to your parents about what they can afford university-wise. If they are open to you studying abroad then talk to your high school college counselor about U.K. universities.

I am guessing you're probably American? As pointed elsewhere if you're an EU citizen there's no issue with you moving at all, I don't think you even really have to file any paper work (though you will need a National Insurance card). If you're American, the requirements for you to move to the UK full time is not easy at all. Last I checked there were a few different routes of entry, one of which (I guess the main one) is to have a masters degree or above with at least something like 7000$ in cash, etc. A few more details would be useful Also permanet residency is a big problem, I think you have to live there continuously for 5 years on something like 'permanent leave' before you can get actual residency (Which I think comes with citizenship)

That very much depends on which country you are a citizen of. If you are a citizen of any EU country you have the right to live and work in any other EU country. If you are from any other country you would have to check with the UK Border Agency. I know you said you didn't want websites but it is far too complicated for an individual to tell you what you need to know, especiaslly when you give no personal information. http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/ http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/studyingintheuk/ http://www.ukba.homeoffice.gov.uk/workingintheuk/
