Why does it matter if I have a gift certificate when paying the tab at a restaurant?

  • I won a $20 gift certificate to a local restaurant on a radio call-in contest. I went to the beanery, ordered and ate. The waitperson brought the check and I went up to the register to pay. The clerk said "You should have mentioned when you ordered that you had the gift certificate." I'm still wondering why that would make any difference.

    You shouldn't have to mention anything. It's their gift certificate, they shouldn't question honoring it.

If a restaurant sells gift certificates, they have no right to restrict how or when it may be used. I have used them in the past when treating others to dinner and having to tell your waiter (in front of your guests) that you'd like to use a gift certificate, would detract from the treat you're providing your friends, who should also be considered prospective future customers of that establishment.

It shouldn't matter. If she would have said that to me, then I would have told her "You should have asked me before you rung up my order how I was paying".

because they ring up items with a promo button that discounts the ticket , whereas now they will have to void the entire sale and re enter it with a gift certificate promo.
