I am a college student looking for change.

Young college student looking to make extra money with a small lawn mowing company ANY ADVICE?

  • My friend and I are college student and we are looking to make a little extra cash during the summer. I don't want to start a legit business or anything like for paying taxes and insurance and all that stuff. I just want to make a few quick bucks as cheap as possible. Can i get around doing this or should i do it the legit way??? We were planing on mowing lawns, doing light tree work, mulching, gardening, etc. I have worked for both landscaping and lawn mowing companies in the past so i know a little but about the industry. He has a truck and trailer, and my step-dad has a whipper and blower that we can use so we are all set in that department. Now we just need a mower... not looking for nothing fancy but i seen 20 inch push mowers online anywhere from 100-300$ or more. I want to keep it cheap so which brand or type should i go for? Or should i get a used one of craigslist/ebay? We are both pretty mechanically inclined and have many tools to do repairs on the equipment if it breaks down, so i was just thinking go for the cheaper mowers but idk thats where i need help? If you have any information on how much money one can make just of the lawn mowing please fill me in... like how much to charge for lawns( i know it depend on size), how long would it take to do a certain amount of lawns( like ten or twenty), how much should one think to spend on gas or repairs monthly / weekly? How many lawns contracts should we get to make a thousand a month each or all together? I greatly appreciate any information that you can give me, Thank you.

Like many other people who answered I would suggest starting your own business. You can come up with a business plan and then look for investors. The best place to pledge for money or time/skills is http://www.rockthepost.com. Hope this helps. Good luck :)

Don't have a set charge. What you charge needs to be negotiable and affordable for All clientele. Also offer to do more than mow their yards. One of my clients likes the trash picked up off her property so, I do so. Depending on the size of the yards you mow; a push-mowr works best for small yards and a riding-mower's better for big yards. Sometimes using both yields better results because push-mowers can cut places riding-mowers cant. As for buying a mower check all the places that sell them and find one, or two, that suits your needs. I recommend buying a Murray or John Deer.

Have you considered a residential / commercial window washing business ? Practically everything you need to know is on the internet, i.e. how to price jobs, equipment needed, methods, tips and tricks, how to get cutomers and more. PRO's - Equipment is relatively cheap. You use the customer's water. Look around there are literally billions of acres of dirty glass out there. Many older folks want it done but won't or can't do it. Usually there are no locked - in residential long term contracts. You choose what areas of the town or city you want to work. If people bitch and and complain, ( they shouldn't if you follow techniques on the internet) you just don't go back. Mostly cash, but business registration is not all that costly. CON's - Unpredictable weather. Don't work in the rain especially if using metal poles for second storey work. Good record keeping a must. Sometimes physically taxing in the hot summer sun. You may not get off the same street all summer long because one neighbour sees you, talks to you, hires you for his house, and on and on and on. Good chance of serious weight gain because old ladies are offering you cookies, pie, brownies etc. and milk. The old guys will offer cold beer ! I personally did this for years with real good success, but as I got older the jobs got physically tougher and tougher and I had to give it up. The good side of it was this work paid for many many winter vacations in the southern U.S. I wish you only the best in whatever endeaver you go for ! GOOD LUCK TO YOU !!!!
