How to overcome the drawbacks of pepper spray?

    The spray doesn't have to get directly in the person's eyes if it's good stuff, just getting close will have an effect, and breathing it in will hurt the person as well. I don't see any reason it couldn't be used on multiple attackers, spray one person first (preferably the leader) and then shift to another target. If you move the bottle around when you spray, the person shouldn't be able to entirely block it with their hands, and if you get their face at all they will likely touch their face reflexively, so what got on their hands will end up on their face anyway.
