What is freedom and democracy?

Democracy is to freedom what gang rape is to making love. True or false?

    The metaphor is a bit extreme but yes. A complete democracy is basically a mob rules mentality with the majority getting their wish while the minority has to deal with it. Fortunately the founders of the United States put in place a constitutional republic and not a democracy. Congress and the supreme court are supposed to protect us from the sometimes riotous mobs of democracy and the minority can still lobby against a majority vote.

Rape and love belong nowhere in the same sentence. One ruins you and leaves an impact on every relationship you have while love does completely the opposite. I think that analogy was completely false. They are absolutely and completely on opposite sides of the spectrum.

Only if you define 'freedom' in the radical selfish ahistorical psychopathic way that Five-Time Losers...er, Objectivts/Libertarians do. Any form of society involves personal interactions which limits the freedom of the individuals in the society (e.g. members are not allowed to kill other members or steal other members' stuff). Yes, democracy CAN devolve into a tyranny of the majority, but there hasn't been a system of government invented yet that can't devolve into tyranny.

I think your metaphor is a bit off, but the principle is sound. True democracy is pretty much mob rule, so it might equate to gang rape, but true freedom isn't necessarily making love, it is the ability to participate or not.
