Does the United Nations General Assembly have any real "power" within the UN?

How come the UN has the power to force other countries from legalizing drugs?

  • The Single Convention on Narcotic Drugs?? What is this? Is this the United States and UN forcing other countries to ban certain drugs? Dont other countries have any sovernty to run their country the way they think it should be run? If America doesnt like stuff like cannabis, cocaine, cocoa leaves or opium, why do they think they can force their will upon the rest of the world? Some parts of the world especially with the indigenous people, its part of their culture. Theyre not trying to take away americas alcohol or americas guns, so why dont America leave them alone? If anyone wants to live in a country where any of that other stuff is legal, why shouldnt they? If anyone else doesnt like it, they can live in a country where its illegal so both people get what they want. Whats the problem why other countries even if the citizens of that country wanted it, why does america and the UN have the power to force otherwise? Dont sovergn nations have any rights?

    The US finances the war on drugs around the world. Poor countries aren't in the habit of turning down millions the US gives them. Also the US may threaten to end other aid if it's demands aren't met.

And where does it say that the UN can force any country to sign up to the Convention? It has no such power; all it is trying to do is to /persuade/ other countries to sign up. Like other such initiatives such as the ICC, there is no reason for the US to sign up if it doesn't want to. That said, I consider that the War on Drugs is well and truly lost, and the army of occupation (dealers, racketeers, thugs) is present and killing your children. You have a choice between drugs, and drugs PLUS drug related crime. You (and we - I am from the UK) have chosen the second. I think drug-related killing, suicides, dirty drugs, overdoses etc. kill and maim more people than clean, legally available (with safeguards) drugs would ever do. As they said in the Vietnam war "we had to destroy the village to save it from the enemy". You have to imprison your children to save them from drugs.
