Has anyone had or is anyone having rotator cuff surgery?

Has anyone here ever had surgery to repair a torn rotator cuff?

  • I'm going to have this done soon on both shoulders, and I'd like to get an idea of what the realistic recovery time will be before being able to exercise. I forgot to ask the doc when I talked to him several years ago.

  • Answer:

Jim did. One shoulder. You do exercise after surgery with the physical therapy that follows Mark. Two shoulders at one time? Well you are going to have double the problems. To get back to "normal" took Jim one year. He still doesn't have 100% ROM but he can play tennis as he used to. It just impacts his serve. I can't imagine why any medical professional would agree to this..both surgeries/shoulders at once. Like having two hip replacement surgeries at once. If you have any specific questions you'd like to ask just do so and I'll get Jim to answer them. The reason the recovery takes so long? Bones m'dear...bones. The shoulder is all bones and bony areas hurt more and take longer to heal. Good luck! We're here if you need us! :) (9hugs))

Have been a personal trainer here for ..years (since 83) before well ..completley different life..ive seen a lot of people in the gym with rotator cuff problems...recovery. times vary... Some swear by the surgery and others swear bad things..Have you had a few opinions? Are you having one shoulder operated on only at first? (the worst one I hope) Have you known(personally) another person who has used the surgeon you are talking to about this...It would be good to talk to some one who had received treatment from this doctor...anymore info..message me..up above

I had rotator cuff repair surgery on my left shoulder about 2 years ago. It took several months of physical therapy, but I now have reasonable use of that shoulder. Pain prior to surgery was unbearable, immediately after surgery, for about a week was terrible. I had rotator cuff surgery on my right shoulder about 1 year go. I don't think it was done properly or completely as the pain never went away and actually got worse during PT. Had another MRI done about 5 months after the surgery and they found another tear, adjacent to the first. I will need another surgery but am reluctant to do it because of the post surgical pain, the sling and then the PT. Pain is bad now, and will need to have it done again. Hoping for some miracle breakthrough. I was told that due to inherent poor blood flow in rotator cuffs that they are prone to tearing and subsequent tears are common.

Ouch. My mother had it done and it didn't work the first time so she had to have it done twice - she was in pain and often complained about it. She is actually pretty tough so it must have hurt her pretty good. I wouldn't think they would want to do both at the same time because you may not be able to use your hands for a couple of weeks. Make sure to follow the recovery instruction so you don't have to get it done twice like my mother. Good luck.
