I think it is a good idea because children who watch the show need to understand the growing issue of poverty. My only concern is whether or not children can actually come to grips with this issue and understand it. I hope that this will be an experience that parents can have with their children and hopefully it will make it easier to discuss the growing problem. As long as the portrayal of the character is realistic enough to grab attention and used in such a way that children understand it, then I think it can be a helpful tool for parents and for children to know the world they live in.

I don't know what goes on, on Sesame Street these days, but if I recall correctly from my youth, the kids that were on Sesame Street were almost exclusively lower-middle class, inner city children. I'm all for muppet diversity and reflecting the viewer demographic respectively so adding a poor muppet is fine by me...But I don't think you can get much more poorer than living in a garbage can, so there's always been a poor muppet..I guess he's just too grouchy to explain classism and wage slavery to the kids.

As a future nutritionist, my gut reaction is to think it's a great idea. I do understand why some people are upset about it teaching kids about "handouts." I agree that one shouldn't sit around and expect society to take care of you so that you don't have to. However, we're talking about kids here. You expect kids to go out and get jobs to feed themselves? Don't think so. It is a fact that there are children in this country whose nutritional needs don't get met, and it's not their fault. This must be addressed, and Sesame Street is doing just that. I don't know how I feel about introducing such young kids to such heavy topics, though. I believe that children should not grow up completely sheltered and oblivious to the world. However, there are things that children can't understand until a certain age. I can't form a solid opinion unless I see it. After it airs, I'll try to find it and watch it, because it interests me.

it means nothing. Did oscar ever get out of his garbage can slum conditions in all the years of being ripped off by the "man" ? No . no one cries for oscar .No one puts him on obama care! Look at poor cookie monster. No social handoutsof cookies to him. Guess you have to be an illegal to get anything in america!!

Great! Now the hungry can be the new oppressed minority group. Now I can get a job. All I have to do is starve myself.
