What countries have you lived in other than the UK?

Out of all the countries ive lived in the world, the UK has the worst healthcare system ever! ( NHS ) WHY ?

  • the NHS functions as though its head has been cut off and no one knows what the hell is going on.. patients dont recieve the treatment they need/deserve , most of the time they are forgotten about and the system makes it so hard for anyone to even apply for help. Even when you do get some attention or help, its redundant and nothing is cured..things are only MADE WORSE!! PLEASE tell me your stories... is it just me ?!

  • Answer:

Come to America. We pay the most but get the least. 66% of all bankruptcies in America are due to medical bills. Thousands of families lose their homes because of this. I don't know how many people lose everything in the UK because of medical bills, but it can't be a lot. People everywhere need something better. We all have to live and need medical care at some time of our lives.

Sorry but I disagree. I'm a healthcare professional working in the NHS maternity services and whilst the NHS is not perfect it does work and the women that I see in the course of my work are very happy with the care that they receive. Also, I had thyroid cancer and the NHS saved my life. The care that I received from the doctors and the nurses were more than 100%. If you really think that the NHS is the worst healthcare in the "world" then you clearly have not travelled to some of the countries that I have been to! Also, if you think that our NHS is so bad then why do you continue to use it. Why don't you go private or go to a country where you have to pay!

Interesting. Personally, I've heard nothing but praise for the NHS from my British friends, who are typically appalled by the U.S.'s lack of healthcare coverage for all its citizens. I suppose every system has its casualties.

While no organisation, whether it be health or otherwise is without it's faults . The NHS is free and I have used it all my life, without any problems whatsoever . I don't know where you're information is coming from, and if you have had a bad experience with the NHS, there are avenues you can take for recompense .

I've never had a problem with it and neither has any of my friends, family, or people I know who work for the NHS. We're lucky here in the UK to even HAVE a health care system. The concept of paying to see a doctor is incredibly alien to me and makes me realise just how lucky I am to be able to pop to see my doctor whenever I need/want to. Also if there is an emergency, it's good to be able to go to a hospital without financial worry. Of course there are flaws in the system, as there are in any system, but I wouldn't say that the NHS is the worst health care system, I don't agree that patients don't get the treatment they need and I don't agree that patients are forgotten about.

The NHS is bloody brilliant, and over the last ten years it's been getting better and better. This, despite the fact that the various Conservative governments seem to be intent on destroying it without it being obvious that they have been doing so.

One of the things that wrecked the National Health Service (in my opinion) was the introduction of mathematical economic models of "efficiency" and "targets" by the Thatcher government. Suddenly, meeting the target became the holy grail, not treating the patient. All sorts of tricks were devised to ensure that patient waiting times were apparently reduced when in reality they increased. Care effectiveness gave way to "cost efficiency" to create a system that was neither caring nor cost efficient. However, from what I have seen and heard of the American system, the creaky NHS is by no means the worst in the world... This move towards numerical indicators of social phenomena by the industrialised west was given a fascinating and illuminating treatment (including the case of the NHS) in Adam Curtis' 3 part documentary "The Trap of Freedom". It's available on Google video and well worth a watch if you have the time. Part 1 is at: http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=-5376212150896990926

USA health care is the worst in the west. A coworker of mine got shot and died in the hospital waiting room, even though he had insurance. He had some unpaid medical bills from a time when he didn't have insurance, and the hospital had to decide if he was worth treating. I don't know if they made their decision, but he had no choice in the matter.

Try some healthcare system in 3rd world countries - they actually still have witch doctors!

which other countries have you lived in? I lived in America, the U.K. and Poland and I can't really complain about the NHS in the U.K., although I've never been seriously ill or anything.. the health care system in America is worse in my opinion.
