since ive had my hip surgeries this summer, ive been using ice when i go to sleep.

had my first one in june 2, and i was using heat at the time too, when i went in for my 2nd hip surgery, i used ice on the other side from my 2nd surgery, i have one of those old fashioned ice bags with the cork on it, those rubber ones and i put water on it and put it in the freezer so it gets really cold, and then i take it out and use it all night, it stays icy all night, i told my sister about it, shes had hip surgeries herself, she told me a nurse told her not to use ice cause metal and cold dont mix and that could create pain, is that true? she said im supposed to use heat instead but a friend told me im supposed to use ice instead, guess i was wondering if i was creating my own pain by doing this every night and if i would feel better if i didnt do that, i just talked to her today so i havent had a chance to check this out yet. so is it possible i couldve been pain free for months if i hadnt used ice every night like that? cause im wondering why im not healing and its creating chaos on the job cause i got permission for sit down work but they dont want to do that forever and i cant work in food service right now, im in a resort, and i cant walk long distances because of it, so is it possible im hindering my own healing when i couldve been feeling better all along and that maybe the 5 months of pain aint from surgery but from using ice every night? would it hurt to use a thermopads instead? i used to have a heated knee brace but it broke, would it hurt to put hot water instead in the icebag and sleep with that instead or maybe it would be just as hurtful once it turned into cold water, any suggestions? is it normal to still be sore 5 months later or is it just cause the ice is causing soreness, i thought ice was supposed to help, not hurt. so is my sister right?

Answer:
My father was told he could expect to have pain from his for months to years after his hip surgery. You should discuss this with your doctor. I would think you shouldn't need ice or heat at this point but only your doctor can give you real medical advice.
