Answer:
Socialized “anything” is a poor idea. Look at our school system… it stinks. Look at our welfare system… it stinks. Look at Medicaid... it stinks. There isn’t a single socialized program in this country that hasn’t been outdone by the private sector. On the surface socialized health care sounds like a great idea. Sure, it provides treatment for those who couldn’t previously afford it, but at what cost? There’s a very good reason why people from all over the world fly to America to have specialized surgeries and treatments. It’s because our health care industry is on the cutting edge of technology, and it’s on the cutting edge because they have a monetary incentive to be. I’m not religious, and I’m not hardcore right-leaning, but I do see some serious problems with socializing our health care system. I’m not saying our current system is perfect, but socializing it would be a really bad decision in my opinion. There has to be a better way. Last year Canada had a massive government auction in an attempt to raise money to pay for their socialized health care system because it was leading them into bankruptcy. The UK has revamped their heath care system twice in the past few years for the very same reason. People keep talking about this “free” health care we need. Who are they kidding? There’s no such thing as “free” health care. It all costs money. Money obtained through taxes. Creating socialized health care in America will do two things right off the bat. It will create government control (limits) on how much doctors can make, which reduces monetary incentive for spending 12 years to become a doctor (lower supply), it will also create an environment where people don’t have to think twice about going to a doctor for every little sniffle and cough (increase demand). Any high school student in America can tell you what happens when you lower supply and increase demand. Cost skyrockets. The problem with skyrocketing cost in a socialized program is that funding is limited to the amount of money obtained through taxes, so either taxes have to go up, or quality of service has to go down. We see this very thing in our public schools. Classes are overcrowded, teachers are underpaid, and school lunches have become the kind of food prison riots are made of. Everyone sees it, we all complain about it, but the only other way to remedy it is through higher taxes, and we beat our politicians up when they even suggest an increase in taxes. In America, nearly 50% of all people pay no federal taxes whatsoever. That means all of the social programs are paid for by only half of the people. Oddly enough, the 50% who pay no taxes are the ones most likely to benefit from those programs. Now you want to add the tax burden of providing health care to more than 300 Million people, to be paid for by the half of Americans who’s quality of service will decrease? Reports from a few years ago showed that only about 15-20% of Americans are uninsured (some of them by choice). That means around 80% of Americans would see a decrease in the quality of their health care, just so the 20% could see a doctor. Hey, I’m all for compassion, but c’mon.
