Can a vegetarian restaurant refuse to serve me steak if I want one for dinner? Isn't that discrimination?
-
I ask this question based on a discussion in a comment thread I am having with others here on AB. If a pharmacist is morally opposed to dispensing the morning after pill, should he be forced to comply? Or should he abandon his profession if he can't fulfill his duties? If a business is run by a religion that is opposed to birth control on moral grounds, should they be forced by the government to cover it in their insurance plan? I suspect some think it is silly for a religion to be morally opposed to birth control, and therefore it it no big deal if they are forced to offer it in their insurance coverage. So, for the sake of argument, I don't think it is a big deal to eat meat. I don't see why vegetarians are so opposed to it. So if the vegetarian restaurant refuses to serve me meat on moral grounds, I'm going to protest and sue. If they don't like it, they need to get out of the restaurant business. Is that reasonable?

Answer:
A restaurant owner should be able to serve whatever and refuse service to whomever. While I'm at it, smoking. If the owner wants his place to be smoker friendly so be it! I don't even smoke, but I recognize a business owner has that right. Lots of accommadations are made for religious reasons. This birth control insurance thing is about the pro choice agenda and big brother ruling your life and nothing else. Seems atheists can make a stink about every stupid little thing like a Christmas tree, but Catholics have to bend on this? It's ridiculous. It's against their beliefs and forcing them to do something they wouldn't do. The government should just put a gun to your head then. We are free, not state property.

No. If they are in business as a vegetarian concern and have made themselves known as such, you have no right to expect them to serve meat, woven baskets or airplane tickets.

Not at all. If you go to an ice parlor and ask for pizza and they won't serve you, that isn't discrimination. It simply means they don't serve pizza. It's not what they are in business to do. A vegetarian restaurant won't even have any meat in there so why should they cook it for you? It would cause cross contamination with the vegetarian offerings, too. Why should they worry about that just because you came to the wrong place for a meal. Want a steak? Go to a steak house

Vegetarian establishments only serve what's on their menu. They may have steak, but it's not the beef kind. You wouldn't win here.

Not if they clearly state that they do not sever meat. That is just so stupid sue happy people tie up they court system with stupid lawsuits. A vegetarian restaurant does not sever meat out of choice not morally. If your bored go get a job a B/F-G/F or whatever but stop silly lawsuits

I'm with you on the idea, but if a nice, juicy steak isn't on the menu, not a lot one could do. Kind of like trying to get a taco at McDonald's or a bedroom set at Taco Bell. But you're right about trying to force someone to sell something that isn't on their list of things they sell; just wrong. No pharmicist is saying you can't get the morning after pill, just some say you can't get it here. Nothing at all wrong with that concept.

The restaurant clearly says it's VEGETARIAN. You shouldn't expect to find beef steak there any more than you would expect to find a pork chop at an Orthodox Jewish wedding reception! Get a life! Go find something else to do with your bleeding heart.

Are you seriously asking whether it is discrimination for a restaurant to NOT serve that which is NOT on its menu?

A vegetarian restaurant would not even have a steak to serve you. Why would you go to a vegetarian restaurant if you wanted a steak? Do you propose that anytime a restaurant does not serve what you want you're experiencing discrimination? If you do not like what a restaurant serves don't go there! That's why there are so many different types of restaurants. You might try to sue but who would take such a ridiculous case? Are you really such an idiot?

If you are a meat eater ,like I am,why would you go into a vegetarian resturant? Is it just to stir up trouble?
