How hard is the AP World History class?

I'm in ELD class. I'm a Sophomore this year. Can I be able to take AP World History?I think I can handle it.

  • I just moved to U.S about 7 months ago. I'm not that good in English but I can understand, either speaking or writing. Is it OK if I take AP World History ?? please give me some advices.Thanks.

  • Answer:

Hi monkeyjunek, I would suggest that you talk to your guidance counselor, or advisor if you have one, or a trusted teacher. To me, it does sound as if you could handle it, as you say your comprehension is pretty good. It's great that you are interested in World History enough to take an AP class in it! But at the same time, you don't want to find yourself in over your head, due not to the course content, but because it will be exclusively in English. So talk with someone like I suggested, or perhaps several of them, and see what they advise. Good luck to you! Katherine

Hi Katherine, I just tested my English this morning, where i live now, a lot of Vietnamese here. And I got Early Intermediate. That is very suck for me. I tested this test before, but in a different city, and I got Intermediate. How come at the second time, i got a below result than the first time i tested. And i want to take Honor or AP class this year, because it good for college. But i think the school i will enroll will mange me into a ELD class, which is lower then i used to be before. Im kinda sad right now. But thanks for your advice. I will try to ask my school's counselor.

Hi monkeyjunek, Even if you took the identical test twice, you are human, so your performance can vary, or it may be that they have a different cut-off for the Intermediate classes where you are now. I admire your determination to take the best courses you can, to prepare for college! It would be worth asking whoever you talk to whether they think your English will keep you from performing well in an AP class; not only do you want to get the most out of any class you take, but you also want to be mindful of the final grade you will get, because that will also impact your college enrollment. It might be that it would be better for your future, in the long run, to take the non-AP classes this year and "ace" them (get great grades), with a goal to take AP classes in your junior and senior years. But again, I can only give you general advice, which is why I am suggesting you talk to school employees who can address your specific situation. See the second part of my response below...

(continued from the prior post.) I can see from what you have posted here that you do have good comprehension of written English, and that your composition skills are also good; the only errors I see are minor, like word choice or tense, and those things will be fine-tuned as you go along. But you express yourself clearly, and being able to do that in a second language is something to be proud of! How long have you lived in the United States? Had you studied English prior to coming here, or just since you arrived? If there is anything else I can do to help you, please feel free to send me a PM anytime. :) Take care, Katherine

oh, again, thank you so much ;) i appreciate a lot. if i have any question, i let you know. I've lived in U.S for nearly 7 months. I did study English in Vietnam. And all high school in VN require students to study English. But they almost focus on Grammar. So if you want to be so good in English, you have to go to International School. And that costs a lot of money. My cousin goes there, and now her English likes American. What grade are you in? Are you in High school too? My school will start in 2 week. where do you live? Thanks. Khue ;)

LOL, I am not in school, and old enough to be your grandmother! I am a registered nurse. But I do have a college degree in elementary education as well, and always try to do whatever I can to encourage good students, like you! I live in Nashville, Tennessee. I do know what you mean about learning a language in school: the emphasis is on grammar, spelling and punctuation, which are all easy to grade, but it really takes practice being "immersed" in a foreign language, and having the chance to converse with native speakers, in order to begin to speak like a native. I will say that, for only having been here a few months, you are catching on very quickly! Take care, Katherine

oh. LOL ;) i live in Garden Grove, California. Thank you, for helping and encouraging me. Its been a lot of fun in US. I've been to Disney Land and Las Vegas, it was so amazing. I have to say US is very beautiful. And at the first three month, when i went to Mc Donald. I cant even hear what they said to me when i ordered an Big Mac. Its the hardest time for me right now. I'll try my best to improve my English. Sincerely, Khue

Hi Khue, It's too bad you are not down here in the South; we have funny accents, but at least we generally talk a little slower, lol! I am sure it is tough for you to distinguish what people are saying at times, because it sounds like all the words are run together, but I promise you, it will get better. By the time you are ready to start your junior year, I bet you won't be having any problems at all! You are already reading and writing well, and comprehending written English very well, and the comprehension of spoken English will come. I have never been to Disney Land, but used to go to Disney World a lot when I lived in Florida, and I loved it! California is a lovely state, and you can see a lot of what the rest of the US has to offer without leaving the state: mountains, desert, agricultural and farmland, beaches, orange groves, and so on. I am not familiar with Garden Grove, but from the name, it certainly sounds like a pretty area! Take care, Katherine

Hi Katherine, Like I remember, Tennessee is Hannah Montana's hometown.. =)). I watched Hannah Montana the Movie and I know its a beautiful place. The movie took place in Tennesse, i think. The green field, with the fence and horses. Its contryside and wild. Not like the busy city here. That's what i saw on the movie. Is it right for Tennessee in real life?Disney World in Florida is more beautiful than Disney Land. Its bigger, and huger. ;) I bet you had a lot of fun there. I will discover all the beautiful place in US in future.^^. Garden Grove is a busy city. A lot of Vietnamese live here. And even when I and my mom go to the market or restaurant, we still speak Vietnamese. So thats not good for practicing English. I try not to speak Vietnamese many times, but when the cashiers know that I'm VNese, they speak VNese to me. So I have to reply in English.Taking with you over this website will help me improve my English a lot. Sincerely, Khue ;)[ it sounds like Koi in Koi fish]

Hi Khue, You are right, Miley Cyrus is from Tennessee. :) A lot of the Hannah Montana movie was shot in the Nashville area, or close by. We do have beautiful green hills and fields, horses, and farms. We also have some big cities as well, like Memphis, Nashville and Knoxville. We have the beautiful spring flowers, like daffodils and tulips, and the leaves on the trees change to lovely colors in the fall. Our winters are cold enough, but we get very little snow, and are more likely to get ice than snow. Certainly colder than the winters we had in Florida, but not nearly as cold as winters in the Northern states! (see next post.)
