Where can i make prints of my paintings?

We want to make prints/copies onto canvas of my gma's paintings (that are oil on canvas). Is this possible?

  • To clarify, if the paintings we want copies of are oil on canvas stapled to wood, how do I get that image printed (using giclee or otherwise). Is the only way to take a photo of the painting? Are there flatbed scanners out there somewhere for larger pictures? I want something local, I don't want to be sending my grandma's paintings across the country. The reason for this is that my grandma just passed, so she can't re-create them, and there are 40+ grandchildren that would like to have all of her paintings....so we want good quality copies. Any additional advice you have on this would be helpful! Thanks!

  • Answer:

Yes. You take the work to a local print house that does Giclee work and have them scan it on a table scanner. They can scan huge works at very high resolutions. Doesn't matter that the work is on a panel that is an inch thick even. Best if the surface is nearly flat however... you couldn't use this with a relief sculpture or something. 2D art only. Having the file they can then use it to re-print Giclees for you and probably on poly canvas as well. You must be the copyright owner however... not sure in this case but you may have inherited the copyright to these paintings if you grandma passed on and left them to you. This is a situation I am unfamiliar with and could be a "sticking point" if you are dealing with an ethical print company they will want some assurance you hold the copyright to these paintings.
