For those of you that enjoy building/putting things together, this is the desk toy for you. It's a lot of fun coming up with new shapes to make, and to show off to your friends. I have two sets: the black and the silver. I've had them for about 2 months, play with them frequently, and have not had any issues with chipping/color fading. The price does seem a bit steep, but considering the running price for this type of magnet in general (not just in the toy ball form), it runs about average. I haven't tried any of the competitors, since I've been happy enough with BuckyBalls to not have to. BuckyBalls may not be everyone's cup of tea, but if you think they look like fun from the videos (search YouTube for some great demos), you'll probably enjoy them just as much as you think you will. WORD OF CAUTION: This is obvious, but it still got me. These are magnets, so keep them away from all electronics and cards with magnetic strips! I put mine in my wallet with my cellphone (yeah, dumb, I know). The phone was fine, but it fried the SIM card and I had to get a new one. If you're going to use this as a desk toy, be sure your desk has a good electronics-free area to use. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? Mclaughlin "sword geek" (Philly) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) This review is from: Buckyballs - The Amazing Magnetic Desktoy I got a set of these at a local bookstore. Within maybe 2 hours of playing, the coating started flaking off. The concept itself is awesome, but there are many companies that produce what is essentially the same product, and do it better. This is a great toy, I'm just saying buy it from someone else. Additionally, the Buckyballs people have made all sorts of threatening legal actions against one of their competitors ([...]). All complete B.S. Poke around on youtube or google, and you can probably find the video detailing it. After listening to the voicemail from the president of Buckyballs, they'll never get any of my money again. My next order goes to zen magnets, in hopes that their execution of this toy idea is better. At the very least, they seem like nicer people. You'll be surprised by the variety of shapes and structures you can build with them, and you'll usually find some new ideas accidentally. The examples they give on the manual are just the tip of the iceberg. You'll really get hours of fun out of this, and your friends and colleagues will be jealous. Unfortunately, they are so strong that they actually damage each other very quickly. After just a few days, they dig through the thin layer of shiny plating, at the magnetic poles. Maybe they are "made to break", so that when you finally get bored of them, they are too damaged for you to give them to your envious friends or colleagues, so they have to buy new ones instead. Groh (Pennsylvania) - See all my reviews (TOP 100 REVIEWER) (REAL NAME) These are the coolest magnetic balls. They are incredibly strong. One ball can hold the weight of the entire 216 ball set. They are great to pass the time and come up with new patterns. They are polarized (they have a positive and negative) so manipulating them into shapes can take a gentle hand and patience as you work them to rotate around. The possibility of shapes are endless but having two or more sets can open up new doors. These are small balls, about the size of a BB pellet each. An additional benefit is the stress relief. They are great for keeping nervous hands busy during a stressful time. My 6 year old (under supervision) loves them too since they are so easy to manipulate. They are so much fun in their own quirky way and worth every penny. There is something nice about the way they feel as your hand works them into new shapes. I would caution that they are easy to lose. We usually remake the cube when we are done to make sure we have all of them. My son has used them for a jump rope, my daughter makes them into lots of little shapes. So we recollect them every time are done or we go on a tiny ball hunt... These are not for young children because they are very strong (and can be very dangerous) magnets.
