What are some non-subscription DVR's?

DVRs for recording broadcast TV to hard drives or DVDs seem to be discontinued. Why, and what will replace them?

  • I'd really appreciate good information about what I can use to record broadcast TV, how long I'll have to wait for it, and, if possible, hos much it'll set me back. I see a few DVRs as I described online, usually refurbished, often very expensive, but I don't really know whether they would work with broadcast. I have a converter box but I'd like to record without having to pay for cable or satelite. Thanks very much for any help.

Notice the sales pitches here on this question asked 29 months ago? Tivo and others want to keep themselves on the gravytrain and charge per month and data-mine your viewing habits. Plug and play over the counter PVR's are a technological no brainer. The technology exists. Legal battles and Media Provider fears (and probably the fears are justified) prevent them from coming to market. Here is a key word for you to use in a wikipedia or search engine search so you can read for yourself just how far this rabbit hole goes: " MythTV " Myth TV is Linux based and Windows versions exist. My point in sending you on this path is to show the very NON plug and play nature of this solution.
