In some spots where the wood is imperfect because of knots, they filled them with wood putty. They really could of charged more and gotten better planks of wood. It was easy enough to put together with pliers, a screw driver and some common sense. I really wonder how long this will last outdoors and how soon all of the hardware will rust. Purchased it because we liked the design of the metal and I guess in a few years I can replace any bad pieces with solid oak. Saw benches at out local home goods store but liked this design better.
