I've been doing hot yoga for years and I've found that I can't get any traction from the grips once I start sweating, and I can honestly say that I've not seen anyone else in class use the grip side of the mat either (and these towels are very popular amongst hot yoga enthusiasts). I guess it's for the same reason I've mentioned, size rather as opposed to function. That said, the towel is fairly absorbent and rolls up nicely to fit in my bag so all is not lost.
