The amount of handling noise the mic picks up does seem excessive but otherwise sound quality is fine. But the software support is beyond dreadful. Sony really ought to have just made this a generic mass-storage device but no, apparently that wouldn't be annoying enough. No problem, install the drivers you say. Nope. To say that this was introduced to the market while Vista was out, the lack of a 64-bit driver is ridiculous. The PC link is a significant part of the device's value and the fact that Sony isn't supporting 64-bit versions of Windows is mindblowing, never mind the situation for Mac owners, which is even worse as there is no support whatsoever for that OS. Sony, if Brother can release 64-bit drivers for printers that are 7 or 8 years old, you can support a product that's a couple of years old. Why would I look at a Sony product again? Gabrielson (Los Angeles, CA USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) This review is from: Sony ICDP620 Digital Voice Recorder PC Compatible via USB (Electronics) Two problems with this device: The record button is inside the play button, with the result that it is very easy to press them both at the same time and the recoding shuts off. It took me two years of annoying shutoffs to figure this out. The setup makes using the thumb on the rec button almost obligatory, but the button is too small and indented to press with a thumb without also pressing play. Second problem: the mike, even when set for low sensivity for close recording, picks up every leaf blower, power tool, crow call, and freeway. Don't get it to use on walks. This review is from: Sony ICDP620 Digital Voice Recorder PC Compatible via USB (Electronics) I have a unit that I have used for almost a year and I find that I need to replace the batteries (high quality alkaline) after about every 6 hours of use, which I believe is too frequently, especially since it will 60 hours of recording on HQ setting. It definitely should have a jack for an AC adapter. Recording quality is OK, editing features are marginal, and user interface (both the unit and editing software) is not intuitive. It's OK as a $30 recorder but is definitely NOT a $350 recorder. Help other customers find the most helpful reviews Was this review helpful to you? Li "Merely a radiohead fan" (NY, USA) - See all my reviews (REAL NAME) This review is from: Sony ICDP620 Digital Voice Recorder PC Compatible via USB (Electronics) Voice recorders are an interesting thing -- you may have noticed that even Sony has difficulty distinguishing between the higher end ($300+) and the lower end models. (One of the extra features, incidentally, was "An On/Off Switch"). Usually the higher end models have better sound, supposedly, but we all know how insignificant that is in the scheme of things, unless we are idiots (i.e. "audiophiles"). Memory is not an issue -- I still have 50+ hours left on mine. Sometimes, the more expensive ones come with a metal housing, which I suppose is nice. I use this for recording notes, and it does a superb job. I wish it had a backlight, but it has a small light to tell you whether its paused (blinking) or recording(red) or playing(green) and so it works well in the dark. I thought I needed a rewind and overwrite and append function (which this recorder has -- but there is a trick to using the overwrite quickly -- you have to make sure its not the very last "track", so you can start rewinding from the start of the next track) but I end up using it very little. It has a pause function, which lets you pace yourself as you think. The main thing that makes this better than the Olympus recorders is the overwrite/append function (but no insertion), but I really don't use it that much, I could probably live without. But, other than that, it seems as if digital voice recorders have reached a plateau, so that even these cheaper units are extremely useful, almost indistinguishable from the more expensive ones. So, from the standpoint of someone who wanted to get away from the journal or the computer, and go for walks while thinking, this is great, and I can honestly say it has changed my life.
