How long should I wait to contact a prospective employer after the interview?

How long is it appropriate to wait after your second interview to contact the Employer if you haven't heard from them?

  • Answer:

I have always believed that persistence is key in landing a job. I would follow up with an email soon after the interview if at all possible, and maybe call after two or three days, to make sure your potential employer knows you are interested, and to keep your name in his/her mind.

I've had my 2nd interview and all went well. The CEO asked me what my career plans were and I said "eventually through hard work and dedication I would like to some day retire as CEO". His comment was they say you should always hire someone that wants your job. I thought this was an extremely positive feedback. After the interview with him I interviewed with the Director of HR. This meeting was a little confusing as she did not ask any questions about the position. I took it as a personality test. A wierd question was do I have any traits that are not being displayed in the interview that would surface in 6 months if hired. I could think of a thing. Basically, what you see is what you get. I regret not telling her that during the interview, but all in all I thought that part went well too. I asked everyone that I interviewed with on a timeframe for the decision. NO one would give me a direct answer. The HR director did say they seem to be very interested in me and that she would be pulling for me. All that to say this has been the longest 3 days of my life. I have been out of work for a year, interviewing for months and have gotten to the 2nd interview several times. I have really put in my prayers with the God and have asked him to move my mountain. I am learning to walk in my faith more and have quite a ways to go with quite a few demons to let go of so that I am back to my good ole self. I know there is no one without sin and I guess I have heard the nay sayers one too many time to have the courage in myself more importantly God so that the demon and doubtful thoughts will stop entering my head. I am trying to speak confidently that I have this job. This is the one for me. They will be calling me any day to say you have it start immediately. God knows that I am down to my last and getting something now is impartive for my son and I. I know the doors have closed elsewhere because he had something better in store for me or at least that was what I was told. Truthfully I believe it's because he want me to see him more and put more trust in his words and not mans. I know what I have said didn't really pretain to anyone's messages, but with the economy the way it is I know I am not allow in stress. So this is my story

Usually with me if I don't hear from the employer within 48 hours then I know I didn't get the job.

It very difficult to wait for an employer to contact you. Like most people stated, people are usually busy. So, if you don't get contacted right away don't give up on the job. Besides, in my case I am moving from state to state and asked for $$ assistance in my move and it takes a little longer to get salaries as well as incentives approved. Hang in there! If you interviewed well and you have the skill they will hire you.

Well, I have waited the 3 business days and am really interested in getting this job and also back to work! The Human Resources person said that they would be in touch w/ me within the next 2 weeks... and I have already seen posted on their site a 3rd position available... I only need one of the positions! I guess I should wait until the end of next week to find out what's up w/ this job. Gee, I hate waiting games... wish me luck!
