Tenzing Norgay was the first man to scale Mt.Everest. He was a Nepali citizen who later took up honorary Indian citizenship. The first Indian expedition to Mt.Everest was led by Brig. G.Singh in Nov 1960 but they had to retreat short of the peak. The first person to climb Mt.Everest who was an Indian citizen at the time of climbing is Col. Avtar Singh Cheema who achieved the feat on 20th May, 1965. The first Indian woman to climb Mt.Everest is Bachendri Pal. Norgay Tenzing he belongs to Nepal and India; we are proud of him.
